Hacker Society prepares students for future-ready tech careers

Students gained valuable insights into software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science and entrepreneurship during How to Be a Step Ahead 2026, a flagship event hosted by the Tshwane University of Technology's (TUT) Hacker Society in partnership with AWS Student Builder Group and SOSH 4.
The event connected students with industry experts who shared career advice, technical knowledge and real-world experiences to help them prepare for careers in a rapidly changing digital world.
Equipping students with knowledge, skills and professional insights needed to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving technology sector, the event featured industry professionals, student innovators and aspiring technology leaders who engaged in presentations, discussions and networking sessions focused on career development and emerging technologies. Students explored opportunities in software engineering, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data science and entrepreneurship while gaining practical guidance for their future careers.
The programme brought together industry professionals, student innovators and aspiring technology leaders for presentations, discussions and networking sessions focused on career development and emerging technologies. Students actively participated throughout the event, asking questions, taking notes and interacting directly with speakers. These discussions provided valuable insight into industry challenges and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.
Ayanda More, an AWS software engineering professional, offered practical advice on securing a first role in software engineering. The session focused on career preparation, essential technical skills and the transition from university to the workplace.
Cybersecurity specialist, Nathinjalo Masilela, highlighted career opportunities in the field, discussing industry pathways, professional milestones and the growing demand for digital security experts.
Machine Learning Engineer, Simanga Mchunu, explained the mathematical foundations of machine learning and demonstrated how AI technologies and backend systems are used to solve real-world problems. He emphasised the importance of combining technical expertise with strong problem-solving skills.
Joining virtually, AI specialist, Akil Boddu, explored the rapid development of artificial intelligence, emerging trends and practical AI tools that students can begin using as they prepare for careers in technology.
Nonhlanhla Magagula, Data science and AI innovator, highlighted the importance of data quality and integrity in developing reliable AI systems. She explained how well-managed data contributes to fairer AI models and more responsible AI development.
Adding an entrepreneurial perspective, student entrepreneur Michael Khoza, shared his experience of balancing academic studies with business ventures. He encouraged students to pursue innovation with determination and showed how persistence can support long-term success.
The programme also included spoken-word performances exploring themes of identity, ambition, creativity and personal growth, adding a reflective element to the day's activities.
Rearabetswe Sons, Hacker Society Chairperson, the master of ceremonies, guided both in-person and virtual sessions and kept the audience engaged throughout the programme.
Reflecting on the event, Sons said it highlighted the importance of resilience, adaptability and leadership while strengthening the organising team's ability to deliver meaningful initiatives for students.
How to Be a Step Ahead 2026 reaffirmed the Hacker Society's commitment to helping students prepare for the future of technology by creating opportunities to learn from industry experts, explore emerging technologies and develop skills needed in the digital economy.
