Career readiness drive gives final-year students a competitive edge

As final-year students prepare to enter the world of work, a career-readiness session at Tshwane University of Technology's Polokwane Campus equipped them with practical skills to strengthen their employability and prepare for Work-Integrated Learning opportunities.

Presented in partnership with the Department of Employment and Labour, the initiative focused on CV writing, interview preparation and job-search strategies to help students navigate a competitive labour market with confidence and professionalism.

Hosted by the Faculty of Humanities, the session equipped students with essential skills including CV writing, interview preparation and registration on the national employment system. The programme aimed to help students make a successful transition from university to the workplace while positioning themselves for employment and Work-Integrated Learning opportunities.

Prof Ricky Mukonza, Academic Manager, encouraged students to apply the knowledge they gained and strive to become valuable employees when opportunities arise.

Dimakatso Mafona, Career Counsellor from the Department of Employment and Labour, highlighted the importance of effective job-hunting skills in today's evolving employment landscape.

"You need these skills to enhance your chances of employability, to connect education to employment, to professionally network, maximise opportunities, navigate the competitive job market, adapt in a changing economy and additionally advance and grow your career," she said.

Tshepho Kgowa from the Department of Employment and Labour guided students through the process of compiling a professional CV and addressed their questions throughout the session. He explained that a CV is a marketing tool that allows applicants to communicate their skills, abilities and the value they can bring to an organisation. He also stressed the importance of honesty and transparency, noting that a well-prepared CV can open doors to career growth opportunities.

The session provided practical guidance and reinforced the importance of being proactive, prepared and informed when entering the employment market. It also highlighted the value of career-readiness skills in helping graduates take confident steps towards their professional goals.
