AWS Summit expands technology horizons for eMalahleni Computer Science students

Emerging technologies shaping the future of business and society came to life for Computer Science students from Tshwane University of Technology's eMalahleni Campus when they attended the AWS Summit Johannesburg 2026 at the Gallagher Convention Centre recently.

The event provided an opportunity for students to step beyond the classroom and experience how emerging technologies are transforming industries and creating new possibilities for the future. Topics explored at the summit included Agentic Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, data analytics and cloud modernisation.

Industry experts demonstrated how organisations are using these technologies to solve complex challenges, improve efficiency and accelerate digital transformation. The discussions helped students connect academic concepts with practical applications and better understand how technology can be used to address challenges facing South African communities.

Mpho Maake, third-year Diploma in Computer Science student, said the summit expanded his perspective on the potential of emerging technologies.

Beyond the technical content, Maake also appreciated the opportunity to interact with professionals and peers from across the technology sector.

"The live music playing in the background was enjoyable. It was so easy to relax, interact with new people and just have a genuinely good time," he said.

The summit also created valuable networking opportunities, allowing students to engage with professionals working at the forefront of innovation and gain insight into the skills needed in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Exposure to industry leaders encouraged students to think critically about emerging technologies and the opportunities they could unlock in their future careers. Such experiences are particularly valuable in a field where new technologies, specialised skills and career pathways continue to evolve rapidly.

Thandeka Maseko, a lecturer in Computer Science at the eMalahleni Campus and a Girls in Tech facilitator, highlighted the importance of industry engagement in preparing students for future careers.

"I feel incredibly glad, proud and excited that our young ladies from the eMalahleni Campus had the opportunity to attend the AWS Summit. It was encouraging to see them exposed to such a platform where they could learn, engage, network and see the many possibilities that exist within the technology space."

Industry exposure plays an important role in complementing academic learning. By attending events such as the AWS Summit, students gain a clearer understanding of how the knowledge and skills developed at university can be applied in professional environments.
